Tricklock in Residence

On June 1, 2006 Tricklock Company became the first Theatre-in-Residence at the University of New Mexico Department of Theatre and Dance thanks to funding and support from the State of New Mexico. Our overall mission for this residency is to contribute to the existing UNM trainings in theatre and dance and to assist in preparing students at UNM for strong, successful careers in the entertainment industry. With so much theatre and film work coming to New Mexico this new creative union is both timely and exciting.

So, what does this mean to Tricklock? Mainly, that there are even more opportunities for our passionate group of artists to connect, share, teach, and grow as creators through more constant, direct, and ongoing work with UNM students. The residency is made up of several componants:

1) A once a year, 8 week, full credit course taught by Tricklock Company members in the styles of our own brand of risky, avant-garde theatre

2) Appearances in Master Classes as guest teachers

3) Student internships (both undergraduate and graduate levels) with Tricklock in areas as diverse as technical design and stage crews, artistic leadership and performance, and administrative/research (available for both credit and work study)

4) Opportunities to collaborate on productions between the Department and the Company

5) Opportunities to share venue spaces, materials, and resources between UNM and Tricklock (including human resources like designers and crew)

6) Tricklock Company members contributing to existing UNM programs such as the Words Afrire New Plays Festival

7) Opportunities to strengthen the links between existing Tricklock programming like Revolutions International Theatre Festival and Manoa Project Teen Playwriting Competition and Summer Ensemble Apprenticeship and UNM

As we continue to explore the range of possibilities open to us with this new residency, our two groups will work cooperatively, but independently. Both UNM and Tricklock are enthusiastic about the future. Tricklock remains excited to continue to produce and create the same cutting edge theatre, now at UNM as well as other venues around town.

“Our new partnership is designed to enhance the educational, outreach and production values of both groups. UNM has the best performance facilities for the kind of experimental theater we do, and we’re excited to be able to give something back to the university from which most of our company members graduated, and where we received outstanding training.”
