About El Automovil Gris:

In homage to the movie-going experience of days gone by, noted Mexican director and actor ClaudioValdés Kuri take a silent film classic—one filled with gangsters, police chases and sumptuous costumes—and give it a thoroughly modern soundtrack through the talents of actors Fabrina Melón and Irene Akiko Iida and pianist Ernesto Gómez Santana. Valdés Kuri also plays the role of an English-speaking benshi in the production. Following the Japanese benshi tradition of silent film narration, the actors artfully render the voices and emotions of each of the film’s characters, offer witty repartee and, at times, sing and dance on stage as well. At the core of the production is the 1919 gangster drama El automóvil gris, hailed as the most important film of Mexico’s silent film era, and one of the few surviving Mexican silents. Directed by Enrique Rosas, the film follows the jewelry heists, shady deals and ultimate demise of the real-life Grey Automobile Gang, outlaws who terrorized post-revolution Mexico in the early years of the 20th-century.

The artistic process of Teatro de Ciertos Habitantes is based on simple principles but with a great range of consequences. It starts with the elements of risk and specific questioning. Constant change is also an essential part of the artistic process. The objective of the company members is to reinvent themselves with each performance, trying not to repeat previous models and discoveries. At the same time, they strive to cultivate refinement through extensive preparation as well as their cumulative experience in direction, production, creative teamwork, and performance. Each work is performed on stage by a multidisciplinary artist (actor-musician-dancer).
